Is it just me who feels this way..? -_- I don't know, I respect other people's opinions and all, and it's fine if you don't feel what I'm feeling. Now please understand that this journal expresses MY opinion on this matter, and that it is pretty strongly worded in doing so. I sincerely do apologize if you are offended by this journal.

[VENTING MODE ENGAGE]

This is a rather unimportant subject, but is anyone else somewhat annoyed when the German accent is written into Germany's dialogue? I mean, I see this EVERYWHERE. :iconraegplz:

EXAMPLES:

The becomes "zhe".

That becomes "zhat".

Will becomes "vill".

What turns into "vat".

NO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NO. :iconpleasenoplz:

*apologizes* Now please, hear me out.

No, I do not find it annoying when the German language is used in his dialogue, I only find it annoying when the German accent is WRITTEN INTO the dialogue(meaning that saying that he is speaking in a German accent isn't really annoying to me). I mean, I understand that people might want the readers to be thinking of Germany's /attractive/ accent when he's speaking or that the readers may want to think of his accent while reading, but I don't think that writing so much of the accent into his speech is really necessary. I am pretty sure most of us can imagine what he would sound like while talking. A lot of times adding this to his speech just makes the character of Ludwig to look rather odd and quite frankly, stupid. I mean, sometimes this accent is so heavily implied that it even makes the reading almost impossible to understand. Example below:

"I vill... I vish zhat it did not have to end zhis vey. I just know zhese zhings…Feliciano. Now, do not cry anymore for zhe sake of me, ja? Only von more day left, and ve vill be free... free to love each other. Yes, ve vill..."

Wat. Do people find this sexy? :iconwatplz:

Putting this accent into Germany's own THOUGHTS just make this matter even more irritating to me. Sometimes this becomes such an issue to me that I have to stop reading a fanfiction because it makes Germany look so bad it's ridiculous. And Germany is my favorite character and my favorite character to read about. ;A;

Oh yeah, and a protip: Please don't use this in erotica. It looks bad. It isn't sexy. No. It isn't.

*main point aside* Also, am I the only one who finds it rather odd when Germany is referred to as, "the German"? I have also found that this is really commonly used in Germany fanfictions. Are you trying to exoticize him? I don't understand why people use that. I find it kind of weird. :I

Thank you for reading this journal, and comment whatever you feel you should. :iconthankyouplz:

Oh my gosh, I am so glad that it is not just me that feels like this! :iconsupertighthugplz: I also have this issue with Kiku/Japan fics, where 'v' is replaced with 'b' and 'l' with 'r'. I know what a Japanese accent sounds like, you don't need to patronise me or make the fic hard to read!

Oddly, I don't mind France/Francis' occasional missing of an 'h' at the start of a word...but then I love French accents, so...*shrug* But yes, phonetic accent writing is a bitch =.=

I actually really like it, same with all the other characters. To be fair, it's far different from writing America to call everyone "Bro" and "Dude" or England to say "wanker" and "spiffing" ect. (Which, as an English person, I can frankly that most of the words used by England are either not used at all nowadays or rarely and dependent on which accent you have)

I think it's mainly due with trying to in keep with the dub of the anime. Don't get me wrong, I love the sub but the dub at least highlights the differences in accent. So people write it in (well, at least I do) so that if you read it back it would be similar to if you heard it in the anime if that makes any sense at all :'D

I get where you're coming from though - The thing with it too is by having those two extremes (so one with an accent wrote in and standard English) everyone else who doesn't have an accent you can really write in, like Spain, just sounds like he has a neutral English accent by comparison.

I guess moderation is the best key. Don't do it on every word perhaps?

I don;t know about other people, but I sometimes use 'The German' when I write, just so I have a little variety for the words. Just saying Germany sat down, Germany pulled out a book.... gets kind of repetitive, right?
I do this with most if not all Hetalia characters, actually.

I just find random rudimentary German words sprinkled into a fan fiction distracting. Kind of different from what you're saying but whatever. :I

Well the thing with referring him to as "the German" is not trying to exoticize but rather to identify who is speaking or doing what. It would be quite boring if every sentence said "Ludwig did .....", " Ludwig smiled...." and so on and so forth. ^^ It's a style or syntax thing and it can seem strange sometimes.

And the thing with the accent, I use it sometimes but only in the context of Ludwig being somewhere else than America and he hasn't quite mastered the English language yet.

I'm talking about general fan-fiction, not reader-inserts.

i agree with some of what your saying but it goes make the fanfic more real if you wite him with his german accent i love then people do it, but i do see how you can get annoyed with this t=z w=v etc, if you dont know how to wirte in his accent (or read it) , but me i find it better when people write him with an accent. (and easyer to read)
my opinion
sorry if i sound bichy cuz sometimes i do when i stress my opinion

I actually kind of agree, as I'm English and I'm sure people from other countries think I have an accent but I'd hate to have the English accent written down. But I do like it when people write 'Veeeh' for Italy :3

I personally like when people do that, but not for a "sexy speaking German I will melt now" sort of way. I like it because no I can't imagine a foreign voice while I'm reading usually. It helps me to be perfectly honest. I don't read lemons or romantic things when it comes to Germany, so I can see where you're coming from, but not all stories make Germany out to be a sexy man-beast sex machine.

You're entitled of your opinion of course, but I enjoy being able to read the character's accent. I read these for fun, not to think... I do enough of that at school. xD

Yeah, I have to agree with you on the accent thing. It can get annoying at times, but I usually just keep reading invade the stories good so I try not to think much on it. Going to 'the German' thing, seeing how German, Chinese, Russian, Italian, etc. can also be referred to as the language or cuisine, the 'the' is placed before to show you're talking about a person. It's used not to get people confused.

I don't read much Germanyxreader's, but I have a similar pet peeve when it comes to anything involving the Italy brothers. Many, many writers like to put the -a's after every three or five words, and it really just kills the mood of the story! It's so annoying, that I usually just don't read any fanfic with it, even though I realize it's a bit close-minded... Glad to know I'm not the only one who is bothered by this.

I think it sort of depends on the story you're reading. In cracks and lighter writing I think it's more appropriate. I try not to overly do it in my writing. It can imagine it to be rather annoying when you're reading it in more serious works. I mean, you're reading a heart wrenching bit and Italy says "I don't-a want-a you to-a die fratello!" It sort of kills it a bit :')

Honestly, from having a German boyfriend; the 'v' and 'z' sounds only comes about strongly when he is either A) Yelling or B) muttering or C) Speaking in his native tongue. Also, it only every shows itself after every two or three words under normal speaking. c:

*Bows down*. Thank you for pointing this out. I agree that writing out the accent is somewhat inconvenient to read (unless of course it's a China one, and they're adding -aru. That's part of the character). One issue I have as far as accents in character dialogue that hasn't been mentioned is Russia. Russia is a character whose dialogue should be written with an accent, but I don't mean changing letters to pronunciation, I mean that most of the time writers write Russia speaking in perfectly fluent English, when that's not how Russia would speak. Russia speaks adding random "the's" where they don't belong, or dropping "the's" where they do belong, as well as dropping "to be" verbs in present tense. I've only seen one Russia fanfic where the dialogue was actually written as he would speak. Forgive me for my little grammar\accent Nazi rant and obsession with things being in character. I'm strange.

Also I misspoke (mistyped? What's the typing equivalent of misspeaking?) Anyway, I realized with the Russia dialogue thing I mentioned that a lot of writers simply put "da" at the end of the sentence for Russia's speaking. And I also forgot my actual point. Verbal ticks and accents are two completely different things. Italy's "ve", China's "aru" (even though it's technically his accent), Russia's "da" and tendency to drop "the's" are verbal ticks and part of the character, therefore should go in dialogue from the character. Writing "the" as "zhe" for Germany and Prussia isn't necessary.

I'm not a writer, but if I may, I'd like to put my two cents in. When I'm reading these fan fictions I really don't mind the accents. However I agree that it shouldn't be overly used and there are times when I believe it really shouldn't be there. I believe the times are when the character is talking/ thinking to themselves (like when it's in their point of view) or when talking with someone with the same accent (like Germany talking to Prussia). It's like how Americans say British people have accents but to the British it is the Americans who have the accents. So if it is in Germany's POV and he is talking to Prussia, obviously they going to need the accents because to them, they have no accents. However if Italy were to come into the conversation his accent would be there because to Germany and Prussia Italy does have an accent.

I don't know how much of that makes sense, but I think you can get the point ^^'. Anyway yes I pretty much agree, I don't mind them but sometimes writing it out to much gets a bit annoying to read.

The accent thing doesn't bother me so much that I'll stop reading a fanfiction because of it. But some of the worst ones are Germany, France, and Japan. We arr can imagine what Japan sounds rike in our heads.

I'm one of those writers that likes to write accents, it helps me to really picture the character, but I can see how it could get annoying for some readers. I agree that some people go overboard, like for instance I've read several Germany fanfictions where people have actually changed the ys to js, yes, it's correct for the accent, but it makes the text very challenging to read. I don't mind little one letter changes like changing what to vhat or that to zhat though.

But on the issues of thoughts I completely agree with you. You think in your native language, so why in the world would a German have an accent that is only found in Germans that are speaking other languages? I feel bad about it, but when I see an accent in a character's thoughts I just have to stop reading.

On the subject of Germany being called 'the German' I only find it strange when the author of story is calling him Germany, if they're calling him Ludwig I don't find it strange.

Just thought I would offer up a slightly different opinion.

I completely agree. I feel bad about giving him what is essentially a very stereotyped version of how Germans speak when they talk English, which most of the time isn't even correct. My friends mother is German and I've never heard her pronounce 'this' as 'zis'.

I also agree about the difference between calling him Germany and Ludwig. It seems more appropriate when he has his human name. <3

I agree with you! I enjoy reading the accents! But I really don't like it in their thoughts. And I agree that changing every little thing gets very ridiculous! I also do not like when half of the dialog is in another language. I don't mind a couple words or even a couple sentences, but I don't like it otherwise.
